Important Note
Every effort has been made to incorporate accurate information
with PhotoSuite 4. However, the periodic revision of the software
may result in some features being not exactly as documented
in your version of PhotoSuite 4. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Minimum System Requirements
PhotoSuite 4 requires:
- 166 MHz Pentium PC with MMX
- Windows 95 or 98, Windows Millennium, Windows NT 4.0 (with
SP3 or later), or Windows 2000
- 32 megabytes of RAM
- 200 megabytes of hard drive space for PhotoSuite 4
- 50 megabytes of hard drive space for Microsoft Internet
Explorer 5 and DirectX 7 (if required)
Install Issues
Installing on Windows NT 4.0
After installing on an NT 4.0 system as the Administrator,
you must reboot and log back in as the Administrator to allow
the system to properly update itself.
Missing Fonts when installing on Windows
NT 4.0
Under Windows NT 4.0, PhotoSuite 4 installed fonts do not
appear in any font list boxes. To make all the PhotoSuite
4 fonts visible, open the Windows Control
Panel and double click the Fonts
icon. This will open the Fonts
dialog and cause all the PhotoSuite 4 fonts to appear.
Installing Over a PhotoSuite 4 Trial Version
If you wish to replace a trial version of PhotoSuite 4 with
a fully-operational one, you should first uninstall the trial
version. If you do not, you must choose "Re-install PhotoSuite
4" whenever you are prompted to do so during Setup.
Virus detected after reboot with Norton
AntiVirus 2000
PhotoSuite 4 installs the Microsoft Virtual Machine (VM) software,
and upon rebooting your system, you receive an alert from
Norton AntiVirus 2000 about a virus in Xmldso.cab (XML classes
that ship in the Microsoft VM). There is no virus, so you
can click Ignore the problem and
continue.
Please read the
Microsoft knowledge base article at Microsoft's web site
for more information.
General Problems and their
Solutions
Display Issues
The optimum setting to run PhotoSuite 4 is 24-bit color. A minimum
resolution of 800 by 600 pixels is required. In the Display
Properties dialog, click the Settings
tab. In the Color palette box,
select High Color (16-bit)
or higher. In the desktop area box, move the slider to at least
800 by 600 pixels. Click Apply,
and then OK. If necessary,
follow any further instructions. See to
view your Display Properties below.
If you run PhotoSuite 4 in 800 by 600 pixels, any Windows bars/panels
(other than the Windows Task bar)
will cause the PhotoSuite 4 application window to be too small
and not display the PhotoSuite 4 User Interface correctly. Change
your screen resolution to something higher than 800 by 600 pixels
or shut down all the unnecessary bars/panels. This will ensure
that you are able to see the maximum viewing area and all the
PhotoSuite 4 User Interface.
Some drop-down lists in PhotoSuite 4 may appear gray when first
opened. As you scroll through the drop-down list, the color
returns to normal. To correct this, in the Display
Properties dialog, click the Effects
tab. If you have the Animate windows,
menus and lists check-box selected, deselect it. Click
Apply, and then OK.
See to view your Display Properties
below.
If the PhotoSuite 4 icon on your desktop looks black and white,
you can correct this in the in the Display
Properties dialog. Click the Effects
tab. Make sure the Show icons using
all possible colors check-box is selected. Click Apply,
and then OK. See to
view your Display Properties below.
Many display problems can be corrected by updating the video
drivers for your video display card.
If you are encountering display problems, be sure to check with
the manufacturer of the video card or their Web page to see
if later versions of the drivers are available. If so, install
the new drivers and retry the operation within PhotoSuite 4.
To view your Display Properties:
In Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and
Windows Millennium, click on the Start button on the Windows
Task bar, then click Settings, then Control
Panel. In the Control Panel
window, double-click on Display.
Out of memory/Disk space messages
PhotoSuite 4 uses space on your hard drive while working to
store large amounts of image data. These temporary files are
removed when PhotoSuite 4 closes. PhotoSuite 4 also checks and
warns when drive space is low. PhotoSuite 4 cannot start when
there is less than 30 megabytes of hard drive space available.
PhotoSuite 4 warns that it may have problems working with large
photos when the hard drive space available is between 30 and
50 megabytes. When the available space is between 50 and 100
megabytes, PhotoSuite 4 simply warns that disk space is getting
low.
Note: These messages will not appear on systems using Windows
95 version 4.00.950 and 4.00.950a due to a technical limitation
in the operating system. This problem was resolved in later
versions of Windows 95.
Sending E-mail from within PhotoSuite 4 issues
On Windows 98 systems, PhotoSuite 4 may not accurately detect
the settings of a MAPI compatible mail client, hence the Send
Via E-mail command may be erroneously enabled. Executing
the Send Via E-mail command
in this situation may cause your computer to stop responding.
If this happens, the computer must be reset or turned off.
Any e-mail service/software that you decide to use to send your
PhotoSuite 4 photos must allow you to add attachments, otherwise
photos cannot be sent.
When sending e-mail via a Web based method, the viewing instructions
can be added to your message. Click the Copy
instructions button on the Activity panel, and then right-click
in the body of your e-mail and choose Paste
from the menu.
When creating your own Web-based method to send e-mail, the
Create New Web Based Method dialog appears. After entering the
Web address and Name of the service, there are two option buttons.
Normally select the Use PhotoSuite
browser option. However, if you experience problems sending
files with attachments with your e-mail service, create a new
profile that uses the Use my browser
option.
If you are using AOL, you should be aware that it now supports
both Web based e-mail as well as its own proprietary e-mail
client. If you are using the Web based AOL Mail, then select
the appropriate AOL Mail option as your preferred e-mail method.
If you are using the AOL proprietary e-mail client, then select
Other E-mail Client as your
preferred e-mail method.
When attempting to send large files using Web based e-mail,
you may encounter "The page cannot be displayed" messages when
trying to upload (or attach) your files to your e-mail message.
This is due to the file size exceeding the Web based e-mail
service's file size limit. Consider limiting the size of the
file using as many of the following options as possible:
- if sending photos, enable the option Send
as JPEG or Send as JPEG
with an approximate size of
- if sending as a slide show, keep any added sound files
as small as possible. MP3 files tend to be about 1MB for
every minute. Also consider limiting the number of photos
in your slide show.
- if sending a Web page, keep any added sound files as small
as possible. Also consider lowering the quality of the photos
to keep file sizes at a minimum.
All attachments are placed in a folder that has the current
date as its name, as indicated on the Activity panel. If you
send multiple e-mails in one day, it may be difficult to locate
the correct attachment in this folder. To make it easier when
browsing for the file, display the files in Details view in
the Choose File dialog, and sort the files by date by clicking
the Modified column header.
When sending JPEG files via e-mail with the Send
file as JPEG with approximate size of option, the file
size of the photo may be much smaller than the requested size.
This may occur because:
- you are sending a JPEG file which gets re-saved and re-compressed
before being sent which in turn reduces the file size. The
size and appearance of the photo is not altered. To avoid
this problem, it is best to send JPEG files using the Send
as original option.
- the file size and quality specified compresses the file
below the limit you have set. If the file size is well under
your specified limit, consider increasing the quality to
improve the appearance of the photo.
Updating thumbnails in the Photo and Project
libraries
At times you may notice that the thumbnails representing the
current photo or project being edited is not updated to reflect
your last changes. To update a thumbnail in the photo or project
library, double-click on it.
Undo/Redo limitations
PhotoSuite 4 provides multiple undo/redo levels in most areas
of the program. The number of undo/redo levels is restricted
only by the available memory and hard drive space available
on the system. To conserve memory and hard drive space while
using PhotoSuite 4, the undo/redo stack is cleared whenever
the program switches photos or switches modes. For example,
when switching from a photo to a project the undo/redo stack
belonging to the photo will be cleared. When returning to the
photo, the undo/redo commands will be disabled to indicate that
the undo/redo stack is empty.
Illegal Program Operation moving over Share
If you are encountering an illegal program operation when moving
the mouse over the Share button
on PhotoSuite 4's Navigation bar, this may be due to your video
driver. Check with the manufacturer of the video card or their
Web page to see if later versions of the drivers are available.
If so, install the new drivers and retry the operation within
PhotoSuite 4. Currently, this is a known issue with some ATI
cards and the default Windows 98 drivers. Updating to the latest
ATI drivers resolves this issue.
Using NetNanny with PhotoSuite 4
NetNanny will not block web pages while using PhotoSuite 4's
integrated Browser. A solution to this problem has not been
found.
PhotoTapestry Issues
If you attempt to create a PhotoTapestry with a high number
of tiles or a large output size on a PC with a small amount
of RAM or insufficient hard drive space, the message Failed
to create PhotoTapestry effect may appear. Set the Tiles
or Output size to a lower value and try again.
Removing all Shared files while uninstalling
PhotoSuite 4 disables the Kodak DC260 TWAIN functions
If you have a Kodak DC260 and had installed Kodak's TWAIN drivers,
choosing to remove all shared files while uninstalling PhotoSuite
4 will remove the Kodak TWAIN drivers as well. In order to use
your Kodak DC260 with TWAIN in other software applications,
you will need to reinstall Kodak's TWAIN drivers. To avoid this
problem, do not choose to remove all shared files when uninstalling
PhotoSuite 4.
Screen Saver Issues
When creating and displaying a Panorama Screen Saver, best
results are obtained when your display setting is less than
1600 by 1200 pixels.
Under Windows 2000 and Windows NT, the Panorama Screen Saver
only works if you are the Administrator.
When creating either an album or panorama screen saver, it
is best to use photos stored on your hard disk. If you want
to include photos from a CD or a floppy disk in your screen
saver, copy the photo files to your hard disk first and then
make a screen saver using the copied photos. This lets you
avoid having to insert a floppy disk or CD to properly display
your screen saver.
Photo Sprayer Issues
When creating your own Photo Set, photos larger than 200 by
200 pixels are resized to fit within this limit, maintaining
the aspect ratio (your original photo is not altered). Smaller
photos will not be sized up.
While drawing with the Photo Sprayer, the preview displays the
photos from the photo set at a lower quality. You may also notice
some screen redraw errors. Once you release the mouse button,
the images are redrawn correctly at the best quality and all
screen redraw errors will disappear.
Posting Web pages
Many of the free Web page hosting services have a limit to how
much data you can upload. If you have problems posting, check
to make sure that you have not exceeded (or are not very close
to exceeding) your limit.
Sometimes posting from within PhotoSuite 4 will not work if
the Web page hosting service requires you to use Passive FTP.
Since PhotoSuite 4 uses Microsofts Internet Explorer functionality
to transfer the files, you need to enable Passive FTP in the
Internet Options dialog. This is currently only available with
Internet Explorer 5.5. If you want to post to a Web page hosting
service that requires Passive FTP and you dont have Internet
Explorer 5.5, then consider saving the Web page and posting
it with an FTP program. Most Web page hosting services offer
instructions and tutorials on how to do this.
Many Web page hosting services place ad banners at the top of
your Web page that may interfere with items on your Web page.
Check to see if the Web page hosting services offers you the
option to display the ad banners in a separate window.
The more photos and sounds you place on your Web page, the longer
it will take to upload (and download). Keep this in mind when
designing your pages.
Some Web page hosting services do not allow posting certain
types of files. For example, Xoom does not allow you to post
MP3 files. Other sites allow you to post files that they will
not pass through to visitors of your Web site. For example,
Tripod will allow you to post MP3 files but they will not
properly play back when you view your Web page. Consult your
Web page hosting service's help for information about unsupported
file types.
Creating Web Pages
Only GIF and JPEG photos can be used for background photos
on your Web pages to ensure that most browsers will display
your background properly. BMP and PNG files also work for
Internet Explorer. Adding any other type of photo as your
background will cause it to not display properly.
Web browsers only support transparency in GIF files. If you
wish to add a photo with transparency to a Web page, you must
first save the photo as a GIF file and then add it to your
existing Web page. Note that GIF files can display a maximum
of 256 colors.
If you intend to add many MP3 files to your Web page, keep
in mind that MP3 files tend to be very large (about 1MB per
minute of music).
If you want to add sound to a specific photo in a Web album
or Web slide show, you must make sure that the photo is displayed
in the Web page's photo placeholder. To do this, you must
first select the photo in the thumbnail control by clicking
the photo thumbnail.
A sound assigned to a photo in the Web album or Web slide
show will not play when the Web page is viewed with Netscape.
However, the Page background sound will play.
Interactive Panorama
- When editing an Interactive Panoramas size, typing in
custom values for width and height cause the panorama to
redraw after every number entry, and the focus is lost from
the edit box. You need to place the cursor back in the edit
box and continue entering your custom values. Consider sizing
the Interactive Panorama by dragging one of its handle,
as this is a faster method.
- Very large Interactive Panoramas take longer to upload
and download. Keep this in mind when posting your Web pages.
- Users with Netscape may have problems viewing very large
Interactive Panoramas you have posted to the Web.
- To move an Interactive Panorama, you must select the
border (if it has one) or the edge (near the dashed lines).
The mouse pointer changes to a pointing finger, indicating
that you can now drag it to a new location. It is not possible
to click within the Interactive Panorama's borders and drag
it to a new location.
- An Interactive Panorama will always play in the foreground,
even if it is sent to the back.
If viewing a Web page from a floppy disk, any Interactive
Panoramas present in the Web page will not display.
- It is not recommended to add more than one Interactive
Panorama to a Web page.
Transparency Support
PhotoSuite 4 can display transparency (alpha channels) for
GIF, PNG, TIF and JPG* files. Transparency is displayed as
a checkerboard pattern in PhotoSuite 4. If you save your photo
as anything other than these file types, (such as a BMP),
the transparency will be lost and the original photo will
be displayed in its place.
When saving as a TIF, PNG or JPG*, the transparency is only
preserved when saving as a 24-bit (true color) photo. When
saving as a GIF, the transparency is only preserved when saving
as an 8-bit (256 color) photo.
*PhotoSuite 4 can only display transparency for JPG files
saved from within PhotoSuite 4 itself. Opening these JPG files
in any other application will not display the transparency.
Cutouts Issue
You cannot use the Magic Wand
or the Color Picker to select
transparency.
Stitching Issues
Stitching works best when there is at least 20 - 50 % overlap.
The more overlap the better the stitching results.
Auto Align works well with
photos that have lots of differentiation. If Auto
Align does not provide you with perfect results, you
can manually move the photos.
Selecting Warp photos for interactive
panorama at step 5, or selecting Prepare
for full 360° Interactive Panorama at step 6 will cause
the preview to be regenerated and all your manual alignment
to be lost. If you are at step 6, you can go back to step
5 and make your manual alignments again before moving on to
the Full Stitch at step 7.
Sometimes when scanning in photos, you may receive the following
error message: "Some images were discarded because their
formats are not supported or their dimensions didn't match
those of the first picture." Make sure the dimensions
of each photo scanned are identical. Cropping your photos
in Prepare to the same dimensions
will allow them to be added to your stitching work area.
Undo Eraser Issue
Once a photo's dimensions have changed, due to Cropping,
Rotating, Straightening or Resizing, the Undo
Eraser will not become enabled until you save the file
and edit the photo.
File Types
Importing and Exporting files
PhotoSuite 4 can open only certain types of photo files. There
are several third-party or custom photo file formats that
PhotoSuite 4 cannot open. Check the manuals and online help
of the software used to create the files for more information
on how to convert them to a format that PhotoSuite 4 can read.
Note: PhotoSuite 4 converts all photos to a True Color (24-bit)
internal file format when they are opened. However, the original
file on disk remains unchanged until the file in memory is
saved. When a photo is saved using the Save
command, the original file will be overwritten with the True
Color version. To preserve the color depth of the original
file, the Save As... command
should be used and a different filename given.
PhotoSuite 4 supports the following photo formats:
For more information about the supported features or restrictions
of a particular format, see the following:
GIF
The Graphics Interchange Format filter supports file format
versions GIF87a (including interlacing) and GIF89a (including
interlacing and transparency).
JPG, JPEG
The JPEG graphics filter supports Version 6.0 of the JPEG
File Interchange Format (JFIF). The JPEG filter has the following
limitations: The filter does not support JPEG Tagged Interchange
Format (JTIF) files. The filter does not support CMYK (cyan-magenta-yellow-black)
JPEG files.
PCD
The Photo CD graphics filter supports the Kodak Photo CD version
3.0.
When opening PCD files with Prompt
for Options checked, PhotoSuite 4 will ask what size
photo to open. If no changes are made to the photo before
going to another area of PhotoSuite 4 then, upon returning
to the photo, PhotoSuite 4 will prompt you once again to select
a photo size. This can be prevented by editing the photo in
some way and then undoing the change prior to moving to another
area of the program.
PCX
The PC Paintbrush graphics filter supports all versions of
the .PCX file format through ZSoft version 3.0, with support
for 256-color photos.
PNG
The Portable Network Graphics filter supports files conforming
to version 1.0 of the specification.
TIF, TIFF
The Tagged Image File Format graphic filter supports all image
types and compression schemes that conform to TIFF Specification
Revision 5.0 and 6.0, Part 1: Baseline TIFF. These include
monochrome, grayscale, palette color, and RGB Full Color image.
The filter correctly handles a single 8-bit alpha channel
stored with an RGB Full Color image. The TIFF filter has the
following limitations: The filter does not support the TIFF
Extensions for CMYK images. The filter does not support multiple
alpha channels (stored as subfiles) or alpha channels that
don't have 8 bits per pixel. The following compression schemes
are also not supported: JPEG, Group 3 Fax, and Group 4 Fax.
TGA
The Targa graphics filter supports Truevision Targa images
with up to 32 bits per pixel.
BMP, DIB, RLE
The Windows Bitmap graphics filter supports Windows and OS/2
bitmaps, Run Length Encoded (RLE) bitmaps, and device-independent
bitmaps (DIB). The BMP filter has the following limitations:
The filter does not support version 2 OS/2 bitmaps and JPEG
compressed files.
IMG
The GEM IMG graphics filter only supports black and white
(1-bit) and grayscale (8-bit) images.
PSD
The Adobe PhotoShop file filter supports all versions of the
file format up to version 4.0. The PSD filter has the following
limitations: The filter does not support multiple layers and
will create a flat representation of the photo. The filter
does not support CMYK (cyan-magenta-yellow-black), duotone,
and 48-bit per pixels and above PSD files.
Camera and Scanner Information
Digital Camera Issues
While downloading photos from digital cameras, it is strongly
recommended to operate the camera while connected via the
camera power adapter. Downloading photos while running the
camera with the internal batteries may result in file corruption
if the batteries are running low on power.
If you want to download photos from a digital camera but don't
want to give them a prefix, you must delete the text in the
prefix edit box and press Enter on the keyboard. If you don't
press Enter, the text previously displayed will still be used
as the prefix.
PhotoSuite 4 does not support downloading photos from Kodak
Cameras that have been mounted as an external drive. You must
acquire your photos from these cameras via normal means (via
Direct or TWAIN).
Due to problems with communication between the Kodak DC 210
WIA driver and the Windows Millennium operating system, when
using the Kodak DC 210 WIA driver in Get
Digital Camera (TWAIN), if you set the camera up to
provide FPX photos when accessed via the WIA driver, the downloaded
photos will incorrectly have the JPG extension. To download
FPX photos from the Kodak DC 210, you must use the Kodak software
that came with your camera, or rename all the file extensions
yourself. If you set the camera up to provide JPEG photos,
it will work correctly.
Directly supported Digital Cameras
PhotoSuite 4 directly supports the following digital cameras:
- Sanyo Camera – DSC-V1 (S), DSC-X1 (N), DSC-V100 (S),
DSC-X100 (N) and DSC-SX1Z
- Kodak DC50
- Kodak DC120
- Kodak DC210
- Kodak DC220
- Kodak DC260
- Agfa ePhoto
- Olympus D-320L (same as model C-820L in Europe)
- Epson PhotoPC 550 & 600
Note: The model numbers listed above may not apply to all
countries. Contact your local camera retailer for the most
up to date information.
Note: Photos from the Kodak DC50 camera cannot be deleted
from within PhotoSuite 4.
If you encounter problems while trying to access one of the
cameras listed above, visit our Web site http://www.mgisoft.com/
for more information about updates.
TWAIN scanner and camera information
PhotoSuite 4 supports devices which implement the TWAIN interface.
Be sure to check with your camera or scanner documentation
to verify that it supports this interface.
Many digital cameras do not install TWAIN driver software
by default. If your camera does not show up in the list on
the Digital Camera (TWAIN) page, check to make sure that the
camera's TWAIN software is installed. Many camera manufacturers
have TWAIN drivers you can download from their Web sites.
Many camera and scanner problems can be corrected by updating
the software that comes with the camera or scanner.
If you are encountering scanning or camera problems, be sure
to check with the manufacturer of the device or their Web
page to see if later versions of the software or drivers are
available. If so, install that software and retry the operation
within PhotoSuite 4.
By default, PhotoSuite 4 scans images using the TWAIN file
transfer method. To force PhotoSuite 4 to use the TWAIN memory
transfer method, enable the Scan
directly to memory option found in PhotoSuite's Options
dialog box. This often solves certain TWAIN scanner problems.
Contacting scanner and camera manufacturers
The following list includes the home page addresses of many
of the manufacturers that make scanners and cameras that you
can use with PhotoSuite 4.
Note: MGI is not responsible for the content of these Web
sites. References to these sites should not be considered
an endorsement of the products sold within them.
Using an HP P1100 PhotoSmart photo printer
An illegal program operation may occur with the HP driver
when printing using the Best
print quality. Please print with Normal
or Draft print quality.
PhotoSuite 4 does not support opening photos from SmartMedia
or Compact Flash cards inserted into the HP P1100 PhotoSmart
photo printer. If you would like to open photos from these
media storage devices, you can use Windows Explorer to transfer
them to your hard drive, and then open them in PhotoSuite
4 via normal means.
Online Issues
Getting Photos from Web pages
PhotoSuite 4 has the capability of dragging and sending photos
from Web pages into its photo library. These operations may
not work on certain Web pages that use nested frames or when
photos are hyperlinks. In these cases, the Save
Picture As... command from the right-click menu can
be used to save the photo. Once a photo is saved, PhotoSuite
4 can open it with the Open...
or Add Photo... commands.
Using Kodak PhotoNet online and accessing
the Internet from within PhotoSuite 4
When you access the Internet with PhotoSuite 4 you may be
prompted to establish a connection via dial-up networking.
When you exit the Internet activity or any of the Kodak PhotoNet
Online functions, such as Get...,
Send... and Print...,
you will not be informed that the connection is no longer
required. To avoid extra connection fees, please remember
to disconnect from the Internet whenever you exit these functions
or when you exit PhotoSuite 4.
Sending Photos to Kodak PhotoNet online
If you are having difficulties sending photos to Kodak PhotoNet
online that are located on a CD, copy these photos to your
hard disk first and then send it to Kodak PhotoNet online.
Using GatherRound.com from within PhotoSuite
4
Trying to edit your photos in a GatherRound.com album that
is not password protected from within PhotoSuite 4's integrated
browser is not possible. This is due to confusion with cookies
and Internet Explorer. The solution is to edit your GatherRound.com
albums in your normal browser.
Fonts Installed with PhotoSuite
4
The installation program for PhotoSuite 4 has added the following
fonts to your system:
- Adolescense
- Banjoman Open Bold
- Bermuda Solid
- Creepy Regular
- Curlz MT
- EraserDust
- Falstaff Festival MT
- Figaro MT
- Footlight MT Light
- KidTYPEPaint
- Mistral AV
- Orbus Multiserif
